Canadian Premiere Frank London's "A Night in the Old Marketplace"Cabaret, Folklore, Jazz, Klezmer, Literature, Multi-media, Pop, Rock, Yiddish

Grammy award-winning klezmer giant Frank London mixes Jewish, jazz, and world beats in his unique adaptation of “A Night in the Old Marketplace”, a phantasmagorical Yiddish play, written in 1907 by I.L. Peretz. Conceived by director Alexandra Aron, with lyrics by Glen Berger, this multi-media performance re-imagines Peretz’s classic work as avant-garde opera, with a heavy helping of off-kilter cabaret in the vein of Kurt Weill and Tom Waits. The supernatural narrative, dark and evocative music, and penetrating English lyrics rooted deeply in the original text of the play, make this timeless piece of Yiddish folklore into an accessible, absurdly funny, dark night of mischief and mysticism in an old Jewish marketplace. Performed by an outstanding group of 10 musicians and singers, and featuring special guest narrator Marilyn Lightstone, this tragi-comic "shtetl ghost love story" is an unforgettable performance experience. Featuring Frank London (trumpet, musical director), Aaron Alexander (drums), Alexandra Aron (director), Alan Bern (piano/accordion), Ron Caswell (tuba, bass), Charlotte Cohn (vocals), Adrienne Cooper (vocals), Steven Hyrcelak (vocals), Marilyn Lightstone (narrator), Tyler Micoleau (lighting design), Brandon Seabrook (guitar, mandolin), Lorin Sklamberg (vocals), and David Wall (vocals).

Yiddish theatre actor, director and founder of Strasburg's Der LuftTeater, Rafael Goldwaser returns to Toronto with his newest one-man show. Based on a story by I.L. Peretz (the father of modern Yiddish literature), Goldwaser’s latest tour de force traces a melody by the legendary klezmer fiddler Pedotser as it evolves and reincarnates across time and space, eventually coming full circle to its original conception. Featuring unique projections of images on talitim, Goldwaser’s existential musings on the soul of a melody and those who possess it is full of beauty and universal meaning.
