New Yiddish Culture
Directed by David Unger, 52 minutes
Wednesday August 29, 7pm, Cineplex Odeon Sheppard Grande, $10
French director David Unger captures a dynamic portrait of the contemporary Yiddish culture scene in this globetrotting musical journey. The documentary features performances and interviews with a number of Ashkenaz Festival alumni, including Adrienne Cooper z”l, David Krakauer, Socalled, Irving Fields, Frank London, Lorin Sklamberg, Aaron Lansky, Boris Sandler, Jenny Romaine and others. This current glimpse into the artistic movement that originally inspired the creation of the Ashkenaz Festival 17 years ago is a perfect primer to kick off the Festival week.
Presented with the following short film:
Needle and Tread (1998)
Directed by David A. Stein, 6 minutes
Adrienne Cooper and the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band are featured in this artful musical short, in which the director’s Bubbie recounts her days as an immigrant seamstress in 1930’s Toronto, while her current life is juxtaposed with that of present-day immigrant garment workers from Asia.
